2.2 Maintenance and care
The squirrel residence should be cleaned regularly, once a week is sufficient.
A squirrel can be learned to relieve itself (poop) at a certain place in the residence. If this doesn’t get learned, the squirrel will do their business anywhere in the residence. Squirrels almost never relieve themselves in their nest or possible hammock. The place where they relieve themselves can be cleaned multiple times a week to avoid strong smells. Male squirrels may mark their territory with urine, but this is done in quite small quantities. Other matters involving maintenance is that the water needs to be refilled on time. The animals need to have access to fresh water at all times. Food leftovers need to be removed on time so it doesn’t attract vermin like rats.
Food storage (that the squirrel made themselves) should not be removed, unless necessary. It can give the animals lots of stress if their storage is removed.
