3.0 Nest boxes/nesting blocks.
This is a video about how a wild squirrel in nature makes a nest. I have used these two nests as inspiration for the most suitable material to use for the squirrels in the aviary.

Squirrels need nest boxes with nesting material to sleep in. The best option is to make multiple nest boxes available for them.
In nature, squirrels also use multiple nests. A guideline for this is in the residence there should be 1 nest box per squirrel + at least one extra. The ideal size nest for a mother with a baby is 40 x 30 x 30cm.
For a single squirrel it can be a little smaller.
It is important that the nesting blocks have airholes. Japanese lissen also like houses made of fabrics and regularly have babies in this.
The nest boxes can be secured at different heights, but don’t place them too close to the ground since they also don’t do that in nature. With placing the nest boxes you should take into account that it, like the avary, should be shielded from wind, sun, rainfall and stays dry at all times. Heating the sleeping place is not necessary. The nest boxes can be made from wood. It is smart to use hard wood or cover it with steel plates so they don’t gnaw it through. The entry can be round or semi-round. Make sure the entry is big enough for the squirrels to enter and exit easy.
